We have been really impressed with how the children have settled back into school and adapted to all the new school routines. We have been revisiting certain topics in order to fill gaps from the time the children were unable to be in school. The children have been working very hard to learn their personal spellings and develop their handwriting skills. We have been focusing on practising our times tables a lot this half term to develop fluency and the ability to apply this knowledge to other contexts.
In English this half term we have been writing our own Greek myths. The children have enjoyed developing their descriptive writing skills by including grammatical features such as expanded noun phrases, similes and metaphors. We spent some time gathering powerful vocabulary that was then used in the children’s writing. Our whole class guided reading text this half term has been The Iron Man. We have really enjoyed getting to know the characters and the children have been very successful in answering retrieval and inference style questions. In maths we have been focusing on place value of numbers up to 10,000,000 and applying this knowledge to the four operations. We are looking forward to the next unit – fractions, which we will be covering in Autumn 2. The children have thoroughly enjoyed our science learning this half term which focused on living things and their habitats. The children have classified different animals based on their characteristics. We then created our own animals based on these characteristics.
