Book Week/World Book Day

World book day this year was a bit different but we all had a really good time both at home and in school.

There were more resources online this year so that everyone could access the resources.

Everyone was able to access the live assemblies, where we heard from all the authors of the £1 books. This introduced the children to a whole range of authors and illustrators that were new to many of them. The themes of the books were:

These sessions really inspired the children, they taught us all a lot about how authors and illustrators gain their ideas.

In all year groups we completed lessons in class and online learning, linked to World Book Day. All year groups started our world book day with an assembly. We then gave a presentation of the Masked Reader videos from across the Federation, guessing which teacher was reading an extract from their favourite books! This caused much hilarity, trying to work out the voices of the readers and seeing the creative masks and disguises the teachers had used.

The children in Reception have been celebrating World Book Day by taking part in lots of animal themed activities.

Over the week, they have been listening to stories read by staff such as ‘The Little Monkey’ and ‘Blown Away.’ On Friday, the children took part in a drawing assembly with the author and illustrator Rob Biddulph to learn how to draw a penguin and a kite.

The children have also been enjoying watching Toftwood’s, ‘The Masked Reader’ and have had fun trying to guess who the staff members are before they are revealed! Some children have also had a go at filming their own version and these have been shared on the live Teams lessons for their friends to guess.

Alongside the Book Week activities, the children have been following craft tutorials recorded by Mrs Ratcliffe, Mrs Brown and Mrs Partridge. They have been busy making chain snakes, lion masks, frog puppets, handprint elephants and sloths!

For world book day celebrations in year 1, the children enjoyed watching the masked reader that the teachers had recorded. They loved using the clues to have a guess at who was reading the story and were really tricked by some of the masks.

We read the story ‘Man on the Moon’ which linked with our topic of ‘Our Planet and Beyond’. As we had been finding out about space explorers the children thought about what they would take with them if they could go into space. We then looked at part of Tim Peake’s diary from his space trip in 2015/16 and the children had a go at writing their own entry to a space diary. The children also thought of questions that they would like to ask Tim Peake if they could.

 

 

 

The children in year 2 celebrated World Book Day by watching some amazing authors talk about how they create and write their books. One author was Serena Patel, author of Anisha the Accidental Detective. Year 2 have now started reading this as their class reading book and are really enjoying it!  
The children were mesmerised by the poet Michael Rosen reading his famous poem of chocolate cake. They were all giggling at the sound effects that he was making and the repetitive language he used when reading his poems aloud. As part of an assembly, they did a draw-a-long with the author and illustrator Rob Biddulph for the World Book Day mascot!

World book day was unusual this year as our lessons took place virtually but year 3 thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless. The children reported that their favourite activities were the draw along sessions provided by the Bournville Book fest website; in these we learnt how illustrators read the descriptions of the author to create their interpretations of the characters. We drew Dobbie with Johnny Duddle, Doris from the ‘Nothing to see here hotel’ series with Steven Lenton and Toothless with Cressida Cowell ( we were very impressed at the fact that, not only is she the author and illustrator of her stories, but can also teach how to speak Dragonese). 

The children were given some free time to create a ‘hilarious story’ using a family anecdote after we learnt that Serena Patel based her series of books on funny things that happened with her family. The children all had a giggle at some of the stories their friends were going to use from runaway lobsters to pretend spiders to leaky loos!

Lastly, the children listened to author Tom Palmer talk about how he turned his love of football into a series of books. He talked about using knowledge from an area of interest/passion to inform writing and the children used his advice to write a short story about something they were passionate about. At the end of the day, the children read their stories aloud and we learnt lots about what things the children in our classes are passionate about and spend their spare time doing!

Year 4 children created their own questions (with answers) for a World Book Day quiz that we held across the year groups later on in the week.  We were really impressed with the diverse questions and the well-chosen texts that meant nearly everyone had read them and we were enthusiastic participants in the quiz! 

Year 4 also looked at the World Book Day £1.00 book: “Little Badman and the Radioactive Samosa” by Humza Arshad and Henry White.  We listened to their video and then read Chapter One of the book. 

The children were asked to think about a favourite food or drink that when they ate it would give them superpowers – just like the character in the book: Humza. 

The children were very enthusiastic with their task and enjoyed it immensely.

In year 5 the children got inspriation from the Scholastic authors who led various live lessons. The childen had inspiration from such authors as Simon James Green, Kimberley Pauley, Lisa Thompson , Helen Rutter and Vashni Handy

This gave the children inspiration to then go off and wrtie their own stories, which many are still continuting past book day; a truly inspiring day for all.

Lastly in year 6 the children did a series of workshops, run again by published authors, many of whom are familiar to them from Reading Gladiators and from them visiting our school.

They learnt how authors create imaginary worlds (our writing unit at the moment) finding inspration and how to create worlds. Then we learnt about how to create stories from our pictures. This day we have followed this up in class, as they realise that many authors write from what they know, using names, places and people that they are familiar with.

Overall the childen have been inpsired to write their own stories. There are many new authors now emerging, as many teachers are sharing new stories the children have been writing at home.

Book Week Spring Term 2020

We focused our federation Book Week on the book ‘Inside the Villains’. This book was a wonderful stimulus to start our week and had the children captivated by the mechanical elements and moving parts! Each year group planned for some amazing activities and learning opportunities based around this book and the final products are brilliant!  

‘It is wonderful to have these opportunities in the school year to inspire children to have a love of reading and encourage children to realise that they can aspire to become authors, poets or illustrators for their future careers!’

Reception

The children in Reception have been reading the Wolf section of the book ‘Inside the Villains.’ We read the story of ‘The Wolf and the seven little Goats’ and talked about what we thought a villain was. We read about the Wolf’s strengths and weaknesses and we enjoyed talking to our learning partners about our own.  We have also been very busy reading wolf themed books and taking part in a variety of crafts. 

Year 1

Year one children enjoyed exploring the villain characters in books this week. Their work was based around the wolf character and they listened to stories with wolves and other villains in. The children had to invent their own villain animal character and looked at words that might be used to describe them and what their qualities might be. The children also enjoyed sharing books with children in Year 4.

Year 2

Year 2 looked closely at the three villains in the book and thought about villains they knew of from other texts. Throughout the week the children worked towards creating a whole class book based on villains they have read about. They researched their villain using the kindles and thought carefully about their strengths, weaknesses and other attributes. Each child had to plan and make the character by thinking about moving parts and how these could be secured. Some children created pockets for implements, like the Giant, some children made tabs to hide things under, like the witch and some children made parts to pull out, like the Wolf’s stomach! By the end of the week the children had created the most marvellous class book and shared this with year 3 on Friday.

Year 3

During book week, Year 3 shared a story with year 2. The children took it in turns to read to each other and ask questions about the stories they were reading. We also created our own villain in DT, based on the villains in the book we focused on for the week. Year three created a wanted poster in English based around their own witch, using adjectives to describe them. In maths, we made a bar chart of our favourite villains in each class. The children collected the data and created a bar chart from this, both in their maths books and on Excel.  

Year 4

During book week, Year 4 shared a story with year 1, children took it in turns to read to each other and ask questions about the stories they were reading. We also created many villainous top trumps cards. Year 4 got creative with story cubes and made some fantastic finger puppets. We also enjoyed using these to create a puppet show! 

Year 5

Year 5 really enjoyed the chosen text, “Inside the Villains” by Clotilde Perrin. We used hot seating and questioning techniques to try to find out more about the characters’ feelings and motives. We studied their fact-files carefully and used that format to introduce the character that they had made up. These were presented very carefully to compile a class book. For DT we explored ways to make flaps, pockets, levers and pop-ups and then we developed these to create our own characters to add to the class books.

Bedtime stories

The children of both schools were able to attend the Federation annual Bedtime stories event. The children and their families came back to school in their pyjamas and with blankets and teddies to share stories, relax and listen to school staff reading and performing some of their favourite texts.

James Campbell – Author Visit Autumn 1 2019

As part of our work on inspiring children to read more and extend their reading choices, we had a visit from the writer, author, story teller and comedian James Campbell. He told all of us about being a writer, about the things we may find tricky and how to get our ideas down.  He asked us where ideas come from and we discussed the world around us, stories and books, and ideas that just come to us. He encouraged us to use our imagination, such as what if we could take the stripes of a zebra.

He also showed us his book Boy Face. He asked where did the idea for stripy super powers come from?  Back to taking the stripes off

The children came up with some really interesting questions:

How long to finish writing a book? Sometimes up to a year! Sometimes only 3 hours (but editing might take a bit longer!).

What was your first book? The pale blue egg.

James then introduced his new book, “Funny Pets” and gave us some anecdotes from the new book.

He did sessions with all of the children from Year 1 to Year 6 across the federation, and in the afternoon some of the children from Years 1, 2, 3, 4 were lucky enough to take part in a writing workshop with him where he talked about using a picture as a starting point for a story. The children designed their own machine like the boy face book to design some wonderful machines. One child designed a machine that did your hair for you, and another designed one that created sausages.

The children then used verbs and adjectives to describe their machines and then finally started to write the beginning of their story where there was a problem with the machine.

Speaking to the children, they were excited to read some of his books. There was a chance to buy some after school, but we have purchased sets of the books for all children to borrow and enjoy from our library in Juniors and in classes in KS1.

Some of the children wrote this report on the visit.

‘’On Friday, the whole school was lucky enough to take part in an author visit from James Campbell who calls himself a comedian, a lollypop lady and an author. James Campbell is currently selling his funny books named Boy face (including the magnetic banana on the cover), the funny life of pets including the hamster conspiracy theory. He was really funny with his presentation.

The children at Toftwood Junior School watched his amazing performance, the Infant children came as well to a session where James, showed them how to improve their writing, and brought the funny side into writing for them. The children came back to class full of ideas and excitement. James Campbell achieved his ideas for Boy face by making an image in everybody’s minds which made them laugh so hard some of them cried. Our favourite parts of the show was when he said about the wild lollypop lady’s and the funny life of pets especially the hamster in the cupboard eating crisps. Everyone enjoyed the visit, because he was so funny and made everyone laugh lots.’’

Literacy Infant Summer Term 2019

Nursery

Nursery children have been writing their own scribe stories with an adult. Some children heard initial sounds and were able to write their initial sounds. They have come up with some amazing story ideas and characters! They have also written their own party invitations including firework pictures.

 

Reception

The children have written about going to Gressenhall and the magical journey they had been on. The children wrote about their favourite part of the trip. A big highlight of their day was getting magic from the tree and finding a golden egg!

Year 1

The children used their recent trip to Holkham Hall to write about real events in the style of a chronological report. They used photos from the three activities to order and write about their day. The children loved this trip and it really inspired their writing to add extra information.

Year 2

The children watched a Disney short clip called Lava. They then researched about Hawaii using holiday brochures and talked about the descriptive language written. They then wrote and made their own brochure! These were fantastic and made the staff want to visit each of their hotels!

They have also written to inform by making a non-fiction Minibeast booklet. They were very excited to make this in to a book to share with the year 1 children.
